Punjab : In a significant development, several workers from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress in Punjab have crossed party lines to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move, seen as a setback for the INDIA bloc, unfolded just days after the Congress and AAP announced a joint venture to contest the Chandigarh Mayor elections.
Amidst preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the defections were officially recognized during an induction event at the BJP’s party office in Chandigarh. This strategic shift in allegiance could potentially reshape the political dynamics in the region, altering the calculus for the impending national elections.
Adding to the political churn, former Member of Parliament Ashok Tanwar tendered his resignation from the primary membership of the Aam Aadmi Party. Tanwar attributed his departure to AAP’s decision to align with the Indian National Congress for the Chandigarh Mayor elections. In his resignation letter addressed to AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Tanwar expressed discomfort with the current political scenario, leading him to relinquish his role as Chairman of the Election Campaign Committee in Haryana.
The realignment of political forces intensified amid the backdrop of controversy surrounding the Chandigarh Mayor elections. The Congress and AAP had forged an alliance, with AAP eyeing the Mayor seat and Congress vying for the Senior Deputy Mayor position. However, the scheduled elections faced a setback as they were postponed due to the alleged “ill health” of the designated presiding officer.
This unexpected delay triggered protests from the Congress and AAP, who had strategically allied for the mayoral elections. The political landscape in Chandigarh remains dynamic and unpredictable as parties recalibrate their strategies ahead of the impending Lok Sabha polls .
