New Delhi: Gangster Ateeq Ahmed and his brother, surrounded by several policemen, were talking to reporters when a hand appeared out of nowhere in Uttar Pradesh and shot both of them in the head. People wearing handcuffs fell there, a video of the scene was shown. The men were being taken to a hospital for check-up when they were attacked.
The murder, caught on camera, comes days after Atiq Ahmed’s son was killed in a police encounter.
The police said that after shooting Ahmed and his brother, the three killers were immediately overpowered and caught by the police.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has constituted a three-member judicial commission to investigate the matter.
About 100 cases, including kidnapping and murder, were registered against Atiq Ahmed, a former politician.
A police team from Uttar Pradesh brought Ahmed, who was lodged in the high-security Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, to Prayagraj on March 26 to appear in court in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case.
The court had on March 28 sentenced Ahmed and two others to life imprisonment in the kidnapping case.
Ahmed approached the Supreme Court for protection, claiming that he and his family have been falsely implicated in the Umesh Pal murder case and may have been killed in a fake encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police.
