The Winter Session of Parliament for 2023 is set to kick off today, December 4, and will extend until December 22. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi affirmed the government’s readiness for a structured debate, urging the opposition to facilitate the smooth functioning of the House. With the BJP buoyed by recent electoral victories, the opposition, led by Congress, is preparing to strategize against the ruling party both within Parliament and on the electoral battleground.
Despite Congress facing setbacks in Madhya Pradesh and losing its grip on Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, it successfully ousted the ruling party, BRS, from Telangana. As the winter session unfolds, a contentious atmosphere is anticipated, as opposition parties express their intent to challenge several bills on the government’s agenda. Among these is the Bill seeking to regulate appointments for the Chief Election Commission and Other Election Commissioners. The government has outlined a comprehensive list of 21 bills for the session, encompassing replacements for key legislative acts such as the IPC, Indian Evidence Act, and the CrPC.
