Congress Alleges BJP Vandalism in Assam: Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra Banners Targeted

The Congress party has accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers of vandalizing posters and banners in Assam’s North Lakhimpur town, meant to welcome the ongoing ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ led by Rahul Gandhi. The state unit of Congress shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing miscreants tearing down banners featuring Congress leaders’ photos in North Lakhimpur at night. The Congress party alleges that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government is unnerved by the support for the yatra.

In a post on X, the Congress stated, “@RahulGandhi Ji’s #BharatJodoNyayYatra drawing thousands of cheering people in Assam has made the @himantabiswa regime restless. While CM is trying to detail the yatra by even threatening of arrests, his followers are tearing off posters & banners of the yatra.. Once again #DaroMatHimanta.. Bhoy Nokoriba.”

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) leader Bharat Narah claimed that the vandalism occurred on Friday night in the North Lakhimpur town area. Narah expressed concern over the unprecedented act, stating, “Never in the political history of Assam had we witnessed rival political parties damaging banners and posters of the other parties.”

Narah further alleged that the BJP-led state government is obstructing the yatra by removing boat batteries and depleting fuel depots, attempting to deter people from participating. Despite these challenges, the Congress leader emphasized that nothing would prevent the yatra’s success.

The ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ led by Rahul Gandhi, is currently on its third day in Assam and will traverse through various parts of Lakhimpur district before entering Arunachal Pradesh. The Congress has also leveled corruption charges against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, dubbing him “the most corrupt Chief Minister of the country.”

Earlier in the week, Jorhat Police registered a case against individuals associated with the yatra for allegedly deviating from the original route. The Congress responded, claiming that the state government is deliberately trying to impede people from joining the yatra. The yatra, which began in Manipur on January 14, is scheduled to conclude in Mumbai on March 20, following the path of the first ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ held from Kanyakumari to Kashmir in 2022-23.
