In a significant setback for the Congress party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Sucharita Mohanty, the party’s candidate from the Puri Lok Sabha seat in Odisha, has returned her ticket. Mohanty cited the party’s inability to provide adequate funds for the election campaign as the primary reason behind her decision.
Expressing her frustration over the lack of financial support from the Congress party, Mohanty revealed that she resorted to public funding in an attempt to finance her election campaign. Despite her efforts to minimize campaign expenses, she faced significant financial challenges that hindered the effectiveness of her electoral efforts.
Mohanty lamented the disparity in financial resources between the Congress party and its rivals, particularly the BJP and BJD. She highlighted the financial prowess of these parties as a significant obstacle, exacerbating the challenges faced by Congress candidates in mounting competitive campaigns.
Expressing her desire for a people-oriented campaign, Mohanty underscored the impact of inadequate funding on her ability to connect with voters effectively. Despite garnering positive responses from the public in Puri, she lamented the party’s inability to support her campaign financially.
In a letter addressed to Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, Mohanty conveyed her decision to withdraw from the electoral race due to the lack of party funding. She emphasized the crucial role of financial support in conducting a successful campaign and expressed regret over the party’s inability to meet this need.
Mohanty’s withdrawal comes at a crucial juncture in the electoral contest for the Puri Lok Sabha seat. With voting scheduled for May 25, her decision underscores the challenges faced by Congress candidates in competing against well-funded opponents, particularly in Odisha’s political landscape.
