Controversy Erupts as BJP Members Arrested Over Flag Removal in Tamil Nadu

In a recent incident in Panaiyur, Chennai, six members of the BJP were arrested for causing a disturbance during the removal of a flagpole outside the residence of party state chief K Annamalai. The incident led to a tense situation, with BJP members expressing outrage over the flag’s removal.

BJP leader DV Sadananda Gowda criticized the arrests, calling them “injustice” and alleging an unethical investigation by the ruling party, DMK. He mentioned that the state governor has taken note of the issue and assured an inquiry into the matter.

Narayanan Thirupathy, BJP state vice president, questioned the need for the removal, labeling it as “vendetta politics.” He raised concerns about the police’s involvement and the arrest of BJP members, including women, creating a chaotic situation in the area.

The incident occurred after some residents objected to the flagpole’s installation. Police officials, accompanied by a JCB, removed the flagpost due to safety concerns and public disturbance. In response, BJP workers gathered, opposing the removal and leading to confrontations with the police.

Amar Prasad Reddy, BJP Sports and Development Cell State President, was among those arrested and subsequently sentenced to 15 days of judicial custody by Tambaram Judicial Magistrate Varsha.

BJP state president K Annamalai condemned the incident, emphasizing the symbolic importance of the party’s flag. He announced plans for installing 100 flagpoles daily for 100 days across Tamil Nadu, reaffirming the party’s resilience despite challenges.

DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan defended the action, stating that political parties, including BJP, need permission to erect flagpoles in public places, emphasizing the necessity of adhering to regulations.

The incident has sparked controversy, reflecting the ongoing political tensions in Tamil Nadu.
