ED Initiates Money Laundering Probe Against Sameer Wankhede, Former NCB Officer

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a money laundering investigation against Sameer Wankhede, former Mumbai NCB zonal director. The case is related to alleged financial irregularities, and three NCB officers have been summoned by the probing agency for questioning in connection with the matter.

Complaint Against IPS Officer

Sameer Wankhede, an IRS officer and member of the Scheduled Caste community, filed a complaint alleging harassment based on caste by IPS officer Gyaneshwar Singh. The complaint was initially lodged with the Mumbai Police on July 18, 2023, and later referred to Delhi Police for further action.

Court Directs Action Taken Report

A Delhi court issued a notice to the Delhi Police, seeking an action taken report (ATR) on Wankhede’s complaint. The complaint alleges atrocities under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act during an enquiry conducted by Gyaneshwar Singh. The court directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, South West District, Delhi, to file an ATR in response to Wankhede’s complaint.

Allegations of Harassment and Atrocities

Wankhede invoked the SC/ST Act, claiming entitlement to protection under the law. He accused Gyaneshwar Singh of exceeding the scope of the investigation, humiliating him based on his caste identity, and threatening him with job loss.

Leaked Enquiry Details and Social Boycott

Wankhede further alleged that Singh leaked details of the enquiry to media outlets, leading to social boycott and humiliation. He claimed torture of witnesses to obtain statements against him and accused Singh of maliciously communicating with other agencies to publicly disgrace him and his community.

Seeking Intervention from the Court

Despite no FIR being registered or necessary action taken by the Delhi Police, Wankhede sought the court’s intervention. His counsel emphasized that multiple complaints yielded no action against Singh, compelling Wankhede to approach the special court under the SC/ST Act.
