Singhbhum Lok Sabha constituency, a Scheduled Tribes (ST) reserved seat in Jharkhand, holds significance as a stronghold of the Koda family. Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda won the seat in 2009, succeeded by his wife Geeta Koda’s victory on the Congress ticket in 2019.
Since 2004, Singhbhum voters have displayed a dynamic electoral pattern, alternating between Congress, Independent, and BJP candidates. Geeta Koda’s win in 2019 marked a shift from BJP’s hold on the constituency.
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) nominated former state minister Joba Manjhi to challenge BJP’s Geeta Koda, who recently joined the party after leaving Congress. Manjhi, an MLA from Manoharpur, aims to challenge Koda’s dominance.
In a pre-poll arrangement, the Congress-JMM alliance agreed on seat distribution, with Congress contesting seven seats and JMM vying for five. Additionally, the RJD and CPI (ML) Liberation will each contest one seat.
Singhbhum parliamentary constituency is set to vote on May 13, as part of the phased Lok Sabha elections in Jharkhand beginning on the same day.
While the BJP-AJSU Party alliance clinched 12 out of 14 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the ruling coalition led by Hemant Soren anticipates a favorable outcome, leveraging potential sympathy due to Soren’s incarceration in a land scam case.
