Gujarat: On Tuesday, former MLA Arjun Modhwadia joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of state party chief CR Paatil in Gandhinagar, a day after tendering his resignation from the state Assembly and the Congress party.
Yesterday, Former Gujarat Congress President resigned from the state Assembly. He is an MLA from Porbandar. He submitted his resignation to the Assembly Speaker. Modhwadia, one of Gujarat’s most senior and influential opposition leaders, had defeated BJP stalwart Babu Bokhiriya in the Porbandar assembly constituency in the 2022 elections.
He was also a Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. He also wrote to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge informing him about his resignation from the party.The senior leader’s resignation comes days before Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ is to enter Gujarat on March 7.
He ended his nearly four-decade association with the grand old party. Modhwadia cited in a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the party leadership’s decision to skip the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Ram Lalla in Ram Mandir in January this year and he said that he has been unable to “contribute to the people” of his constituency. ”
He further said, “I had thought that by being in Congress, I would bring economic and social change among the people. We got independence in 1947, but Mahatma Gandhi had said that we have got political independence, economic and social independence is still pending. This imagination I was also working in the Congress. I tried many times to draw attention to the way the Congress Party has moved away from the public. But, I failed in that. So today I have announced all the posts and primaries of the Congress. Resigned from membership. I express my gratitude to the Central and State leadership in my political journey so far.”
