This year, Holi falls on Monday, March 25th, with Holika Dahan preceding it on March 24th. The auspicious timings, as per Drik Panchang, commence with Purnima Tithi at 09:54 AM on March 24, 2024, concluding at 12:29 PM on March 25, 2024.
Holi’s roots trace back to ancient Hindu mythology, where it commemorates various legends, primarily emphasizing the victory of good over evil. One such tale revolves around Lord Krishna and Radha, epitomizing divine love and the acceptance of differences. Another legend narrates the story of Prahalad’s devotion to Lord Vishnu, triumphing over the malevolent intentions of his father, King Hiranyakashipu, and his aunt Holika.
Another significant legend associated with Holi recounts the tale of King Hiranyakashipu, his devout son Prahalad, and his demoness sister Holika. According to Indian mythology, Hiranyakashipu, granted a boon rendering him impervious to harm from both humans and animals, grew arrogant and demanded worship from all. However, Prahalad remained a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, much to his father’s chagrin.
In a bid to eliminate Prahalad, Hiranyakashipu enlisted Holika’s aid. Holika possessed a cloak that rendered her immune to fire, and thus, she sat on a funeral pyre with Prahalad in her lap, intending for him to perish in the flames while she remained unscathed. Yet, as the pyre was lit, Prahalad’s unwavering faith invoked the protection of Lord Vishnu.
In a divine intervention, a gust of wind whisked the protective garment from Holika and draped it over Prahalad, shielding him from harm. Consequently, Holika perished in the flames while Prahalad emerged unscathed, symbolizing the triumph of righteousness over malevolence.
In commemoration of this mythological event, Holika Dahan is observed on the eve of Holi, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. It serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of faith and the ultimate triumph of righteousness in the face of adversity.
Celebrated with exuberance and fervor, Holi manifests in a kaleidoscope of colors, echoing laughter and joy. The festival heralds the arrival of spring, bidding farewell to the dreary winter months.
