Honduras: At least 41 women were killed in a riot at a women’s prison in Honduras on Tuesday. Inmates died of burns in violence between two gangs over illegal activities. Police officials gave this information.
Yuri Mora, spokesman for Honduras’ National Police Investigation Agency, said most of the victims were burned, while others were shot. According to media reports, at least seven female inmates were admitted to the Tegucigalpa hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the shooting and stabbing.
The head of the country’s prison system, Julisa Villanueva, said the rioting was triggered by recent efforts by authorities to crack down on illegal activities inside prisons. Because of this there was violence in the jail on Tuesday. He said that steps are being taken against organized gangs in the jail.
He said that the gangs operating in the jails exercise their extensive control. Also inmates often set their own rules and sell prohibited goods.
According to US media, Honduras’ national women’s prison holds about 800 inmates, more than double its capacity. In 2020, several violent incidents took place in the Honduras prison.
In three incidents in Pakistan’s Punjab province, two teenage girls and a man were killed ‘for false pride’ while a man’s nose and ears were chopped off. In the first incident, in Sargodha, 200 km from Lahore, Naseer Ahmed killed the 19-year-old daughter and then the lover Mukhtar on suspicion of having an affair with Mukhtar of his own area.
In another incident in Chiniot, Ahmad Sher killed his sister (18) of the family and threw her body in a drain. The lover was not found in the city. In the third incident, five brothers chopped off the nose and ears of a man for allegedly having an affair with his sister.
