New Delhi: Showers of rain can soon give great relief to the people battling the scorching heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the next two days, warning of strong thunderstorms, rain and hailstorm in the northwestern states from Punjab and Rajasthan to UP-Bihar.
According to the EMD, an active Western Disturbance is very likely to move across the northern region from May 23 to 26. Along with the Arabian Sea, due to cold air from the Bay of Bengal, the moisture in the atmosphere is expected to increase, which further increases the chances of rain. In such a situation, a decrease of four to six degrees is also expected in the day temperature in northwest India during the next three days.
Scientists point out that such thunderstorms are common during the pre-monsoon period, and they mostly affect North-West India as well as North-Eastern states. Although this time, the effect of winds coming from the seas is likely to be more visible.
IMD senior scientist Dr. Soma Sen Roy told sources, ‘A large amount of moist air is expected to blow from the Arabian Sea. Strong south-westerly winds are also blowing from Bay of Bengal to Northeast India. Together these two can strengthen the rain activity in this region.
Possibility of rain from 23 to 26 May
In such a situation, during the next four days from the evening of May 23 to the evening of May 26, there is a possibility of rain with thunder, lightning and occasional strong winds at many places in North-West India. On the other hand, its intensity may increase further on 24 and 25 May.
There may be torrential rains especially in most parts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit Baltistan. On the other hand, there is a possibility of strong winds at a speed of 50-60 kmph in Uttarakhand, which may extend to Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on May 24 and West Uttar Pradesh on May 25.
Forecast of rain from Punjab to Bihar
In the forecast, there is a possibility of hailstorm in Punjab and Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh and northern Rajasthan in the next two-three days. There is also a possibility of hailstorm at different places in Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim on 23 and 24 May. During this, strong winds and hailstorm can damage weak structures. In such a situation, the Meteorological Department has urged the local administration to prepare accordingly. Its effect can also be seen in parts of Northeast India, where there may be very heavy rains with thunder, lightning and strong winds in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura in the next four days.
In this latest forecast of the Meteorological Department, there is a sign of great relief from the heat. At present, the maximum temperature in a large part of the country remains between 40 and 45 degree Celsius. Delhi recorded the highest temperature of 44.9 ℃ on Monday, while Jhansi in west Uttar Pradesh reached a maximum temperature of 46.5 ℃.
At present, heat wave conditions are prevailing in parts of Delhi and South Haryana, South-West Uttar Pradesh, North Madhya Pradesh and East Jharkhand. IMD says, “But during the next three days, as the rain-laden clouds move forward, there is a possibility of a decrease of 4 to 6 degrees in the day temperature in northwest India.
