Indian oppn leaders including Rahul Gandhi slams govt over ‘Apple notification’ issue, claims, ‘phones are being tapped’

New Delhi: Several opposition leaders, including Shashi Tharoor, Raghav Chadha and Mahua Moitra, have claimed phone hacking. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the central government on the claims of opposition leaders. He said keep tapping my phone. We are not afraid, but fighting people. According to government sources, the Apple messages were triggered due to “algorithm malfunction”. A statement will be issued soon.

In response, Priyanka Chaturvedi took a dig at the government over the “algorithm malfunction” that triggered the warning messages from Apple, calling it a “joke of an excuse”. Rahul said, ‘Apple’s notice is now against the entire opposition. All the people in the office of the Congress are there. Congress party has made a list, all of them are involved in this case in one way or another. Your attention is sometimes taken here and there.

Rahul Gandhi said that very few people are fighting against him, but we are not afraid. You can do phone tapping as much as you want. I don’t care. If you want to take my phone I will give it to you. Priyanka Chaturvedi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw over the issue.

After this Mahua Moitra alleged that other leaders from the opposition INDIA bloc, including Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Shashi Tharoor, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha, CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and others in Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s office too received the warning messages from Apple.

Opposition leaders alleged that the government was trying to hack their phones. He attached screenshots of the messages he received on his phone and email late Monday night or Tuesday morning. In a another tweet, Mahua Moitra attached screenshots of the warning message from Apple with the subject, “State-sponsored attackers may be targeting your iPhone”. Moitra also said Priyanka Chaturvedi and three others from the Opposition INDIA bloc received the same messages on their phones and emails.

Taking aim at the government, the TMC MP tweeted, “I got message and email from Apple warning that government is trying to hack my phone and email. @HMOIndia- Get a life. Adani and PMO scoundrels – your fear makes me pity you. @priyankac19 – you, me and 3 other Indians have got it so far.”

This came after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey had accused Mahua Moitra of asking questions in Parliament in exchange for money from a businessman, following which she was asked to appear before the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee on November 2.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Chaturvedi also said in a tweet that she also received the same message and asked if the Home Ministry would investigate the matter. “So not just me but @MahuaMoitra has also received this warning from Apple. Will @HMOIndia investigate?” She said.

Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Shashi Tharoor also tweeted that they had received alert messages from Apple. Khera wrote on X, “Dear Modi Sarkar, why are you doing this?.” Tharoor tweeted, Received from an Apple ID, threat-notifications@apple.com, which I have verified. Authenticity confirmed. Glad to keep underemployed officials busy at the expenses of taxpayers like me! Nothing more important to do?.”

Reacting to the issue, Rahul Gandhi said “we are not scared” and said the government can do “phone tapping as much as you want”. A press conference, he said, “Very few people are fighting against this but we are not scared. You can do as much (phone) tapping as you want, I don’t care. If you want to take my phone, I will give it to you.”

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi also confirmed that he received an Apple threat notification last night that “attackers may be targeting my phone. Hitting out at the government, Akhilesh Yadav said, “This is very sad. This should be investigated. There are many senior leaders whose phones have been hacked. This is against democracy.” He added,”When the people are against you, what will you achieve by spying.”

Apple Threat Notifications is a system designed by Apple to alert users who may be targeted by state-sponsored attackers. According to Apple’s support page, these users, who receive notifications through iMessage, are being personally targeted because of who they are or what they do.

“Unlike traditional cybercriminals, state-sponsored attackers use extraordinary resources to target a small number of specific individuals and their devices, making these attacks much harder to detect and stop. State-sponsored attacks They are highly complex, cost millions of dollars to develop, and often have a short shelf life.

Apple said, “Most users will never be targeted by such attacks.” “State-sponsored attackers are very well-funded and sophisticated and their attacks evolve over time. Detection of such attacks depends on threat intelligence signals that are often incomplete and incomplete.

It added that it is possible that some Apple threat notifications may be false alarms, or some attacks may have gone undetected. It also added, “We are unable to provide information about what led us to issue threat alerts, as this may allow state-sponsored attackers to adapt their behavior to avoid detection in the future.”
