Jailed Ex-J&K MLA Engineer Rashid Files Nomination Papers for Baramulla Seat

Former Jammu and Kashmir legislator Engineer Rashid, currently incarcerated in Delhi’s Tihar Jail, has submitted his nomination papers for the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency. The Awami Itihad Party (AIP), founded by Rashid, completed all requisite legal formalities before filing the papers with Baramulla’s Returning Officer, Minga Sherpa, as confirmed by party spokesman Firdous Baba.

“We awaited the final approval to proceed with the paperwork, and thankfully, we concluded the formalities on Sunday,” Baba stated.

In a strategic move, AIP has also designated Abrar Rashid, Engineer Rashid’s eldest son, as the alternative candidate in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

Engineer Rashid’s participation has transformed the electoral landscape in Baramulla, turning it into a three-way contest. He is now pitted against Omar Abdullah, the former Chief Minister representing the National Conference, and Sajad Gani Lone from the People’s Conference. Notably, the J&K Apni Party, led by Syed Altaf Bukhari, has thrown its support behind Lone for this election, opting not to field its own candidate.
