Jammu And Kashmir: Retired senior cop shot dead during prayer at mosque in Baramulla

Baramulla: In a sudden turn of events, a retired police officer was shot dead by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday. The terrorists fired upon Mohammad Shafi, a retired senior superintendent of police, when he was offering namaz at a mosque in Gantmulla and succumbed to injuries. The area has been cordoned off after the incident and a search operation has been launched to track down the terrorists, police said, adding further details were awaited.

“Terrorists fired upon Shri Mohd Shafi, a retired police officer, at Gantmulla, Sheeri Baramulla, while praying Azan in the mosque and succumbed to injuries,” the Kashmir Zone Police said in a post on X.

The incident came to light one day following the successful prevention of an infiltration attempt by the Indian army in the Akhnoor sector of the Jammu region. Four terrorists had attempted to breach Indian territory near the International border in the Akhnoor area. The Indian army reported that the terrorists were observed dragging a body across to the opposite side of the fence.

Tensions in the region escalated further after a Japanese-owned chemical tanker off the coast of India was targeted by a drone fired from Iran. Although the attack caused no casualties and the fire was extinguished, it underlined growing regional security concerns. The US Army and Indian Navy’s response to the incident highlights the complexity of maintaining peace in a region rife with diverse security challenges.
