JDU Supports One Nation One Election, Excludes Local Body Polls

In a significant move, Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) has expressed support for the One Nation One Election initiative, advocating for simultaneous polls for the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. However, the party clarified its stance by excluding local body polls from the synchronized election process.

JD(U)’s Stance on Simultaneous Elections

Submitting a memorandum to the high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, JD(U) emphasized its backing for holding Lok Sabha and Assembly elections together. The party, represented by General Secretary Sanjay Kumar Jha and Parliamentary Party Leader Rajiv Ranjan Singh, specified that while Panchayat and Municipal elections should be simultaneous, they should be conducted separately from the national and state-level elections.

Support for Strengthening Governance

JD(U) highlighted the importance of synchronized elections in fortifying the architecture of good governance. Referring to reports from the Law Commission and parliamentary committees, the party underscored potential benefits, such as reducing the financial burden associated with frequent elections and providing elected representatives with longer, uninterrupted terms for policy implementation.

Potential Advantages of Simultaneous Elections

The JD(U) argued that synchronized elections could lead to more stable and continuous policy implementation, allowing leaders to focus on governance and long-term issues rather than short-term electoral considerations. Additionally, the party suggested that holding all elections together might enhance voter turnout, fostering a more engaged electorate.

RSS-Affiliated Group Also Supports Simultaneous Elections

In a related development, the committee also met with a delegation from the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad, which presented its support for simultaneous elections. The representatives indicated that synchronized polls could streamline the electoral process and contribute to the overall efficiency of the democratic system.
