Jharkhand CID Freezes Over 8,600 Bank Accounts Linked to Cybercriminals in Extensive Operation

The Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Jharkhand has undertaken a sweeping operation against cybercriminals, resulting in the freezing of more than 8,600 bank accounts.

The Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Jharkhand has undertaken a sweeping operation against cybercriminals, resulting in the freezing of more than 8,600 bank accounts. A total of 2,002 accounts in Deoghar district alone were frozen due to their alleged association with cybercriminal activities, particularly suspected use in phishing schemes. The CID revealed that the frozen accounts also include 1,183 in Dhanbad and 959 in Ranchi.

The initiative, driven by information from the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, is part of a broader strategy to combat cybercrimes in the region. Jharkhand CID Director General Anurag Gupta emphasized the collaborative effort between authorities and financial institutions, stating, “The data will be shared with the superintendent of police of all districts and banks for verification of the accounts.”

Gupta highlighted the intention to trace the details of account holders and take action against those found to be fake or linked to cybercriminal activities. Over the past three months, the CID has already arrested 495 individuals allegedly involved in cybercrimes, with 107 facing FIRs for cyber fraud.

In addition to the account freezes, the CID reported the seizure of 1,164 mobile phones and 1,725 SIM cards during operations against cybercriminals. Regular raids are being conducted across various districts, including Deoghar, Giridih, Bokaro, Jamtara, and Ranchi, as part of ongoing efforts to curb cybercrime in the region.
