Kapurthala court grants bail to Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira in criminal intimidation case

Chandigarh: In a decision that has attracted significant attention in political and judicial circles, a Kapurthala court has granted bail to Congress Legislative Assembly Member (MLA) Sukhpal Singh Khaira, a prominent figure in the political scene. The bail relates to a case of criminal intimidation, a charge which has considerable implications for an MLA’s career and reputation.

59-year-old Khaira had previously been arrested on January 4 in connection with this case, shortly after being granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding a 2015 NDPS case. The arrest had triggered allegations of political vendetta from the Congress against the ruling AAP in the state.

A case was registered against Khaira (59) at Subhanpur police station following a complaint by a witness related to a 2015 drug case. The charges leveled against him include intimidating the complainant Ranjit Kaur. Kaur is the wife of Kashmir Singh, the key witness in the drug case mentioned earlier.

Ranjit Kaur, in her complaint, detailed an incident where two masked bike-borne assailants allegedly threatened her family on October 15 the previous year, demanding Kashmir Singh withdraw his statement against Khaira. She also reported receiving an anonymous call on October 22, threatening the elimination of her family.

The decision to grant bail was taken today by Additional Sessions Judge Senior Division Supreet Kaur after the hearing on January 12. The court’s decision shows that there are reasonable grounds to believe that Khaira is not a flight risk and that he will comply with the necessary legal requirements. , The bail bond was set at Rs 1 lakh.

This development allows Khaira to escape custody while the case continues to move through the legal system. Khaira’s son and lawyer expressed gratitude for the support during this period. The incident is notable not only for its impact on Khaira’s career and reputation but also for the insight it provided into the legal process and its application to public figures.
