Karnataka Announces Dedicated Secretariat for Scheduled Tribes, Amplifying Welfare Initiatives

In a significant move aimed at bolstering welfare programs, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the establishment of a separate secretariat in Karnataka dedicated to implementing initiatives for Scheduled Tribes. He made this announcement during the Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti program held at Vidhana Soudha’s Banquet Hall, where he also conferred the prestigious Maharshi Valmiki Awards.

During his address, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah highlighted the government’s commitment to the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST). He emphasized that, during their previous term, a decision was made to allocate grants to these communities based on their population. This strategic move resulted in a significant increase in funds allocated under the SCSP (Scheduled Castes Sub Plan) and TSP (Tribal Sub Plan) schemes—from a mere 6 thousand crore to an impressive 30 crore.

In the current fiscal year, the government has allocated ₹34 thousand crore for SC/ST welfare programs, underscoring their commitment to these marginalized communities. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pointed out that 17.1% of the state’s population belongs to the SC category, while 7% belongs to the ST category, according to the 2011 census data.

Furthermore, he highlighted Karnataka’s pioneering status as the first state to enact legislation mandating a separate grant for SC/ST welfare based on their population. This law has facilitated the allocation of ₹88 thousand crores from 2013 to 2018, ensuring a focused and sustained approach to uplift these communities.

The occasion, marked by the celebration of Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti, was observed across district and taluk centers, reflecting the state’s dedication to the cultural and social heritage of its diverse population.
