Karnataka: Ex CM Jagadish Shettar resigns from BJP over denial of ticket for assembly elections

New Delhi: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Sunday announced his resignation from the party after not getting a ticket from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the May 10 assembly elections. Shettar said he would resign from the party and the assembly. Shettar, who was the leader of the opposition in the assembly during the Congress rule in the state, also said that he would definitely contest the upcoming assembly elections.

Recalling his contribution to the party and his responsibilities at key posts in the state, Shettar said, “I am upset with the way I was humiliated. I thought I should challenge them. That is why I have decided to contest the elections. I will go to Sirsi and submit my resignation (to the Vice President) from the Vidhan Sabha. Eventually I will resign from the party I formed in the state.”

The Lingayat leader also alleged that a well-planned conspiracy was hatched against him. Earlier on Saturday night, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Union Ministers Prahlad Joshi and Dharmendra Pradhan met Shettar at his residence.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asked former Chief Minister Shettar (67) not to contest the assembly elections to be held on May 10 to make way for the youth. Before the meeting with Bommai, Joshi and Pradhan, Shettar told reporters that he had been offered any member of his family to contest the election, but he said he did not agree to it.
