Karnataka: Huge currency notes burnt in failed robbery after thieves try to open ATM with gas-cutter

The incident highlighted when Mumbai bank officials spotted the failed theft attempt when they reviewed CCTV footage. He immediately contacted the owner of the building where the ATM was installed. Bengaluru: In an audacious attempt, Currency notes worth Rs 7 lakh stored in an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) were reduced to ashes after a gang of thieves attempted to break it open using a gas cutter at Nelamangala on the city outskirts of Bengaluru on Wednesday night, police said. This incident which happened on Thursday was completely captured in the CCTV footage of the ATM.

The poorly executed robbery involved the use of gas cutter to break into the ATM. Unfortunately, the heat generated from the gas cutter caused the currency notes to catch fire, causing a loss of approximately Rs 7 lakh. This unexpected accident forces the thieves to prematurely abandon their mission and flee the scene, leaving behind their equipment.

Two masked assistants attempted to cut open the ATM using a gas cutter which was located at a private building in Nelamangala Town in Bengaluru Rural District. The thieves fled the spot leaving the gas cutter equipment behind after the building owners rushed to the spot. Axis Bank personnel visited the spot and inspected the ATM which was partially cut using the gas cutter.

The local police became alert and started investigating the incident. The CCTV footage, a crucial piece of evidence, confirmed the involvement of two individuals in the crime. The footage, along with the abandoned equipment, is currently aiding the police in their pursuit of the culprits.
