Bengaluru: Since ancient times, language has been an essential tool of communication that bridges gaps, promotes inclusivity and promotes understanding between diverse groups. In a significant step underlining this ideal, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri made an announcement during his visit to Bengaluru, Karnataka: Fuel prices at petrol pumps across the state will now be displayed in the Kannada language as well. He said this statement while addressing a press conference as part of the ongoing Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra.

The Petroleum Minister further remarked in the statement that, the petrol prices at fuel outlets are only displayed in English and Hindi, however, in response to a request, it has been decided to also provide the prices in Kannada. “There was a demand that it (prices of fuel) be displayed in Kannada and I immediately announced that it will be available in Kannada from January 10 onwards. I have told my colleagues to notify the oil companies that they should have the prices indicated in Kannda,” he added.

The paradigm shift, which begins the next day, is more than just a translation of numbers. This points to the importance of promoting the use of local languages and making important information more accessible to a wider section of the state’s population. This decision acknowledges the fact that a significant section of Karnataka’s population may be more comfortable with its regional language.

This initiative is not just about linguistic representation. It is about breaking down barriers that can prevent effective information dissemination. By displaying fuel prices in Kannada, the government is enabling individuals who are more proficient in this language to stay informed about fuel price fluctuations, an aspect of daily life that directly impacts their Affects finances.

71-year-old Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s declaration is a testament to the government’s commitment to addressing the linguistic needs of the local population. It emphasizes the importance of supporting the inclusion of regional languages in official and public information displays. The move can be seen as an effort to enrich the linguistic landscape of the country and respect and preserve the diversity that defines it.
