Lok Sabha Election 2024 : In a significant decision ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have decided not to contest from Uttar Pradesh, deviating from earlier speculations. The move marks a departure from the traditional stronghold seats of Amethi and Raebareli, respectively, which have long been considered bastions of the Gandhi family’s political influence.
Instead of vying for re-election from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi is set to contest once again from Wayanad, Kerala, a predominantly rural constituency known for its scenic beauty and biodiversity. Gandhi’s decision to contest from Wayanad, a move that gained national attention, underscores the Congress’s strategy to fortify its position in Kerala, where he secured victory in the 2019 polls with a significant margin.
While Rahul Gandhi’s candidacy in Wayanad is expected to bolster the party’s prospects in Kerala, the decision to forego contesting in Uttar Pradesh reflects a strategic realignment of priorities. By not contesting from Uttar Pradesh, both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi are likely to focus on broader campaign efforts and organizational responsibilities to galvanize support for the Congress across various states.
Union Minister Smriti Irani, who clinched victory in Amethi in the 2019 elections, recently criticized Rahul Gandhi’s tenure in the constituency, accusing him of neglecting development initiatives. Irani highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s efforts in transforming Amethi and emphasized the BJP’s commitment to addressing the region’s developmental needs.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is slated to convene today to deliberate on the party’s manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
