Maharashtra: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA representing the Gevrai assembly segment in Beed district, central Maharashtra, has submitted his resignation from the legislative assembly to show his support for the Maratha reservation demand. Laxman Pawar stated that the Maratha quota issue has remained unresolved for several years and expressed his solidarity with the Maratha community’s demand.
In a letter addressed to legislative assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar, Mr. Pawar declared, “The Maratha quota issue is pending for many years. I extend my support to the demand of the Maratha community. To support the cause, I am tendering my resignation.”
It’s worth noting that the BJP is part of the Shiv Sena-led ruling coalition in Maharashtra, alongside the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction).
This move by Laxman Pawar follows the resignation of Shiv Sena MPs from Nashik and Hingoli, both loyal to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also stepped down to support the Maratha reservation demand.
Members of the Maratha community, led by activist Manoj Jarange, have initiated a renewed wave of protests to advocate for a quota in government jobs and educational institutions. Mr. Jarange has been on an indefinite fast in a village in Jalna district since October 25.
Notably, Beed district experienced significant unrest during the recent Maratha quota agitation.
