Mundra is India’s first port to handle 16.1 million tonnes of cargo

Mundra Port, the flagship of the Adani Group, made history in October by handling a record-breaking 16.1 million tonnes of cargo, marking the highest volume ever managed by an Indian port, according to a release from the conglomerate .

As the largest port in the country, it has already handled 102 million metric tonnes of cargo this year, experiencing a robust year-on-year growth of 9%. Remarkably, the port reached the 100 MMT milestone in just 210 days, surpassing last year’s record of 231 days.

Mundra Port saw significant double-digit growth on a year-on-year basis for both containers and liquid and gas cargo, as mentioned in the press release.

Furthermore, it achieved yet another milestone by handling 4.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in just 203 days, a feat previously accomplished in 225 days during the previous fiscal year.

The port expanded its cargo portfolio by adding new types, such as Hydrolysis Pi Gas (HPG). In 2023, it played host to over 2,480 ships and served more than 11,500 rakes.

Due to its strategic location, Mundra Port offers exceptional facilities and is well-prepared to handle large vessels thanks to its capability to maintain a deep draft.

Notably, in July 2023, it accommodated one of the largest ships ever, the MV MSC Hamburg, measuring 399 meters in length, 54 meters in width, with a carrying capacity of 15,908 TEUs and a reported draught of 12 meters.

In 2021, it welcomed the 13,892 TEU APL Raffles, the largest container vessel to call at any Indian port. This Singapore-registered vessel boasts dimensions of 397.88 meters in length and 51 meters in width.

Mundra Port enjoys excellent connectivity with the hinterland, particularly through the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC).

With its impressive cargo volume growth rate, Mundra Port has set its sights on handling 200 MMT in the fiscal year 2025.
