Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik formally submitted his resignation as the Chief Minister of Odisha to Governor Raghubar Das at Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar on June 5. This comes a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended his 24-year reign in the state.
Several BJD leaders gathered at Patnaik’s residence, but he went alone to submit his resignation. He waved at the waiting journalists and left immediately after handing over his resignation letter.
Election Results
In the state assembly elections, the BJD secured only 51 seats, a significant drop from the 112 seats it held in the previous term. The BJP crossed the halfway mark with 78 seats, delivering a substantial blow to the BJD, which has often supported the BJP on the national front.
The BJD also faced a severe defeat in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, failing to win a single seat. The BJP won 20 out of the 21 constituencies in the state, with the Congress securing one seat.
