Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah noted that it took decades for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to abrogate Article 370, emphasizing that they are also prepared for a prolonged struggle. He stated, “It took the BJP decades to reach here. We are also prepared for the long haul.”
The Supreme Court upheld the Centre’s decision on August 5, 2019, to abrogate Article 370, granting special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The court urged steps to conduct Assembly elections in the Union Territory by September 30 next year and directed the restoration of statehood at the earliest.
Opposition leaders, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, expressed disappointment with the ruling, describing it as sad and unfortunate. However, senior Congress leader Karan Singh welcomed the decision, advising those opposed to accepting the inevitable and redirecting their efforts toward the upcoming elections.
The apex court also instructed the Election Commission of India to conduct legislative elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, 2024. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram emphasized the importance of holding elections and promptly restoring statehood.
