Paris: A massive explosion rocked a building in Paris’s Left Bank on Wednesday, injuring at least 24 people. The explosion caused a fire that spread smoke to buildings in the city, forcing the evacuation of nearby buildings, police said. The cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained.
A Paris police official said the explosion caused the facade of a building in the 5th arrondissement to collapse. The explosion occurred near the historic Val de Grace military hospital. Paris police chief Laurent Nunez said 24 people were injured, including seven in critical condition.
Nunez said the fire has been brought under control. The condition of some of the injured is critical, the police officer said. The search operation is still going on to rescue the injured. “The explosion was extremely dangerous,” said Florence Berthout, the mayor of the arrondissement. The neighborhood has been cordoned off and hundreds of emergency workers, police and soldiers have taken over the area.
