The opposition leaders used slogans against the BJP government, highlighting the ‘cash-for-query’ case and the Ethics Committee’s recommendation that TMC MP Mahua Moitra be expelled, to create a turbulent start to the winter session of Parliament. Riding high on its recent electoral successes, the BJP plans to take on the Congress-led opposition during the meeting.

1. Opposition’s Tumultuous Start:

The opposition leaders disrupted the proceedings by raising slogans against the BJP government, centered on the ‘cash-for-query’ case and the Ethics Committee’s recommendation that TMC MP Mahua Moitra be expelled.

2. Government’s Legislative Agendas:

The government has outlined an ambitious legislative agenda for the session, with 21 Bills on the docket. This includes bills to replace the IPC, the Indian Evidence Act, and the CrPC.

3. BJP’s Confrontation with Congress-Led Opposition:

Riding on recent electoral victories, the BJP aims to confront the Congress-led opposition during the session, with key matters for discussion including Moitra’s expulsion and the introduction of significant bills.

4. Extension of Women’s Reservation:

The Narendra Modi government has decided to include the assemblies of Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry in its plans to increase the percentage of women in legislative bodies. Two bills pertaining to this initiative will be debated.

In Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Navy Day celebrations. After praising the Navy’s vital role in determining India’s future, he observed an amazing feat of naval power.

6. Opposition Alliance Dynamics:

Amravati MP Navneet Rana dismissed the I.N.D.I.A alliance, expressing confidence in PM Modi. She stated that the opposition lacks the capability to pose a substantial challenge to the Prime Minister.

7. BJP’s Response to EVM Allegations:

BJP MP Sushil Modi dismissed opposition leaders’ allegations of EVM tampering, attributing their claims to post-election disappointment. He expressed confidence that the opposition factions would have faced defeat in Madhya Pradesh even if they had contested together.

There is a degree of uncertainty about the proceedings, as TMC MP Mahua Moitra indicated when she expressed doubt about the Ethics Committee report being tabled in the “cash-for-query” case.

9. AAP Protest Against Misuse of Central Agencies:

On the grounds of Parliament, AAP MPs held a protest in which they claimed that Central agencies were being misused for political ends. The demonstration emphasized the demand for transparency and accountability in the functioning of investigative bodies.

10. Proposed Amendments to J&K Reorganisation Law:

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to propose amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, including changes to seat allocations in the Legislative Assembly and reserved seats for Scheduled Castes and Tribes.

11. Urgent Discussion on Death Penalty:

Congress MP Manish Tewari submitted an Adjournment Motion Notice in the Lok Sabha, seeking an urgent discussion on the death penalty imposed on eight former Indian Navy personnel in Qatar.

12. Rajya Sabha Discussion on Economic Situation:

It is expected that Rajya Sabha MPs will start a conversation about the “economic situation in the country,” offering perspectives on current economic issues and policy recommendations.

These developments highlight the dynamic nature of parliamentary proceedings and the wide range of issues on the national agenda as the Winter Session progresses.
