Washington: The pilot has died after an F/A-18 fighter jet crashed on Thursday in San Diego, California province in the US. The United States Marine Corps confirmed the death of the F/A-18 fighter jet pilot in a release issued on Friday night.

Search and rescue teams recovered the body of a US Marine Corps pilot from the crash site, the release said. He has expressed condolences to the family members of the pilot who died in the accident. The statement said: “With a heavy heart, our condolences go to the Marine’s family during this time.”

The identity of the service member will not be released until “24 hours after notification of all next of kin is complete,” the Marines said.

Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego said a McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet aircraft crashed near the station late Thursday, but there was no damage to property on the ground. The Navy is probing the cause of the accident.

According to the Marine, an investigation into the accident has begun. The F/A-18 Hornet is the nation’s first all-weather fighter and attack aircraft, and is considered the “workhorse of Marine Corps tactical aviation” according to the Naval Air Systems Command.
