Probe agency arrests Punjab AAP MLA Jaswant Singh in connection with 2022 money laundering case

Chandigarh: In yet another development, Central probe agency, Enforcement Directorate (ED), on Monday detained Aam Aadmi Party’s Amargarh MLA Jaswant Singh Gajjan Majra, 60, into custody in connection with a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case registered against him last year.

ED sources said that Gajjan majra was taken into custody as had evaded four summons for questioning in the case. He would be produced in a Mohali court on Monday evening, they said. Jalandhar ED team took Gajjan Majra under arrest when he was addressing an AAP workers’ meeting at Amargarh in Malerkotla district in the morning.

In September 2022, federal probe agency, had raided Gajjanmajra’s house besides a school and a cattle feed factory run by his family at Amargarh.

In September last year, three premises linked to the Aam Aadmi Party leader, including his residence, were searched by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with an alleged ₹ 41 crore bank fraud case. A sum of ₹16.57 lakh, 88 foreign currency notes and incriminating documents were recovered during the searches, the CBI had said.

According to the CBI, Gajjanmajra is among seven people, including the Tara Corporation Limited, named as accused after a case was registered based on a complaint by a Bank of India branch in Punjab’s Ludhiana. The case also named several individuals, senior executives and others, as well as “unknown public servants”.

ED action against Mr Majra comes amid a rash of action by central investigative agencies against opposition parties and leaders, including AAP boss and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel is under scanner of ED over claims he got ₹ 508 crore in bribe the Mahadev betting app owner. Chhattisgarh votes for a new government in a two-phase poll starting Tuesday, and Mr Baghel has slammed the BJP for having “weaponised” the ED.
