Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra Faces Resistance as it Re-Enters Assam

The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government in Assam has denied permission for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s yatra to traverse key city roads in Guwahati on its re-entry into Assam. Amidst allegations from the Congress of intentional roadblocks, the state administration cited the working day in Guwahati and potential traffic congestion as reasons for redirecting the yatra to the National Highway 27.

Rahul Gandhi Yatra Faces Resistance as it Re-Enters Assam. This decision follows a dramatic incident near the shrine of social reformer Srimanta Sankardeva, where Mr. Gandhi planned to visit. Chief Minister Sarma urged him not to visit before the Ram Mandir ‘pran pratistha’ ceremony in Ayodhya, expressing concerns about conflicting media coverage.

During the attempted visit to the shrine, Mr. Gandhi and his associates were stopped, leading to a dharna at the roadblock site. The shrine’s managing committee stated that Mr. Gandhi would not be allowed to enter before 3 pm. Despite the hurdles, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and Batadrava MLA Sibamoni Bora proceeded to the shrine and offered prayers.

In response, Mr. Gandhi emphasized his belief in Sankardeva’s philosophy, promoting unity over hatred. The Himanta Biswa Sarma government has been accused by the Congress of creating obstacles throughout the yatra, including instances of slogans being raised by a group of workers.
