Six people including VC of AMU nominated for UP Legislative Council, approved by Governor

Governor Anandiben Patel on Monday, Vice Chancellor of AMU Prof. Tariq Mansoor and Saket Mishra, son of former cabinet secretary Nripendra Mishra, have been approved to nominate six people associated with the field of education, advocacy and social service as members of the Legislative Council.

Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Prof. Tariq Mansoor has become the Member of the Legislative Council (MLC). The Yogi government had sent a proposal of his name to the Governor, which was approved by the Governor. The Chief Electoral Officer issued its notification.

According to a notification issued late on Monday night by Chandrashekhar, Special Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh, the governor has nominated six people as MLCs on eight vacant posts.

The other four names include Ambedkar Mahasabha president Lalji Prasad Nirmal, former BJP Braj region unit chief Rajnikant Maheshwari, BJP’s Varanasi district unit chief Hansraj Vishwakarma and Azamgarh’s Ramsurat Rajbhar.

On Saturday, CM Yogi Adityanath had sent a proposal for the nomination of these names to the Governor. After conducting a legal examination of the proposal, the Governor approved the nomination of all the six members to the council. Among them, two are backward, one Brahmin, one Dalit, one Vaishya and one Muslim. There are three members from Purvanchal, while two from Braj region, one member from Awadh region. Acting Chief Electoral Officer Chandrashekhar said that notification for nomination of six members has been issued. Tell me, out of these, three posts of nominated quota were vacant from 29 April 2022 and three posts from 27 May 2022.

Significantly, the Governor can nominate a maximum of 10 members to the Upper House.

Currently, in the 100-member Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, the BJP has 74 members, while the main opposition Samajwadi Party has nine members.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Apna Dal (Sonelal), Nirbal Indian Shoshit Hamara Aam Dal (Nishad), Jansatta Dal Loktantrik and Shikshak Dal (non-political) have one member each.

The independent group and independents have two members each. Eight seats were vacant, out of which six have been filled.
