Srinagar: On Thursday, NIT Srinagar declared winter vacation in the middle of semester exams. As per the reports the students have also been asked to vacate hostels with immediate effect.

The three-week dry spell in Kashmir ended on Thursday with snowfall in the higher reaches of the Valley and rains in the plains. The Dean of Students Welfare issued a circular which reads, “Pursuant to declaration of Winter Vacation for students w.e.f 30.11.2023 vide Order No. 60 of 2023 issued under endorsement No. NITS/R/23/600 dated 30.11.2023 all hostel boarders (Boys and girls) are instructed to vacate the hostels with immediate effect.”

It added,”This is issued with the approval of the Competent Authority”. In the early hours of Thursday Snowfall was recorded in Gulmarg in north Kashmir and Sonamarg. The weather department has forecast more snowfall during the day.

Most parts of the Valley, including Srinagar city, received light rains. The night temperature rose significantly at several places in the Valley with Gulmarg being the only weather station where the Mercury settled below the freezing point on Wednesday night.

With Kashmir gripped by cold weather conditions, authorities here on Saturday announced that schools in the valley will remain closed for about three months for the winter break. Earlier this week, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has announced winter vacations in a phased manner for educational institutions across the Kashmir Valley.

While the winter break for students up to class 8 will begin on November 28, that for students of classes 9 to 12 will begin on December 11. It will end on February 29, 2024 for all students. The decision comes as a response to the prevailing severe cold conditions in the region and is designed to provide respite to both students and staff.
