St. Stephen’s College Suspends Over 100 Students for Morning Assembly Non-Attendance

St. Stephen’s College in Delhi University has reportedly suspended over 100 first-year students for not attending the morning assembly, citing insufficient attendance. The college authorities sent emails to the students on February 4, instructing them to schedule appointments with the principal, with a warning of potential debarment from semester two examinations as a penalty.

St. Stephens college suspends students for not Attending Morning Assembly. A subsequent email on February 17 confirmed the suspension and reiterated the threat of debarment. Concerns were raised by students and teachers, who reached out to Principal John Varghese, urging the immediate withdrawal of the suspension order. The students explained in their emails that scheduling appointments on short notice was not feasible, especially for those whose parents reside outside Delhi.

In response, teachers expressed their shock over the development, highlighting that the shortage of attendance at the morning assembly should not be a valid reason to debar students from examinations. The controversy has prompted discussions within the college community about the appropriateness of such punitive measures for non-attendance at the morning assembly.
