The Supreme Court is set to consider today whether to grant interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been in judicial custody at Tihar jail since March 21. The case is related to a money laundering investigation linked to the scrapped Delhi excise policy.
A bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta will hear the plea filed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader. The court, on May 3, hinted at the possibility of granting interim bail to Kejriwal considering the ongoing Lok Sabha elections and the upcoming Delhi elections scheduled for May 25.
During previous hearings, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) opposed Kejriwal’s bail, referencing statements made by AAP leader Sanjay Singh. The court, however, maintained neutrality, stating that a decision on interim bail is pending.
Questions were also raised regarding Kejriwal’s official duties, particularly concerning his capacity to sign official documents while under judicial custody.
Fresh controversy arose as Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena recommended a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe against Kejriwal, alleging political funding from the banned group ‘Sikhs for Justice.’ AAP leaders dismissed the recommendation as another BJP-driven attempt to discredit Kejriwal.
