Tamil Nadu experiences heavy rainfall, leading to school closures in several districts

Tamil Nadu experienced widespread rainfall across the state, particularly in the southern districts, as the North East Monsoon gained intensity on Thursday. In response to heavy downpours and flooding, several districts, including four taluks in the Nilgiris district, as well as Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore, declared a school holiday for the day.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in the state. This weather pattern is influenced by a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast and adjoining East Central Arabian Sea, resulting in the formation of a low-pressure area over the East Central Arabian Sea. It is expected to move westward and become less marked in the same region over the next 24 hours.

Kotagiri in the Nilgiris district recorded the highest rainfall with 228 mm. Continuous rains triggered landslides at multiple locations along the Nilgiri Mountain Railway line, leading to the suspension of mountain train services. Additionally, a landslide occurred in Kotagiri, affecting road traffic and prompting diversions via Coonoor to Mettupalayam.

According to the RMC, moderate thunderstorms were reported in several districts, including Tenkasi, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Tiruvallur.

The Northeast Monsoon has been active throughout Tamil Nadu, with rainfall also affecting Chennai and its surrounding areas.
