Varanasi Court Grants ASI Request to Withhold Gyanvapi Report Temporarily

The Varanasi district court has partially allowed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to defer the public disclosure of its Gyanvapi mosque complex survey report for an additional four weeks. The court fixed January 24 as the next date for hearing on various pleas related to the ASI survey report.

ASI’s Request and Court Decision

The ASI, through standing counsel Amit Kumar Srivastava, submitted an application requesting an extension before the court. The court, in its decision, partially granted the plea, stating that it deems it appropriate to delay the disposition of the related pleas until after the ASI files the survey report in the original suit (No 610/1991) in the court of the civil judge (senior division) FTC Varanasi. The court set January 24 as the next date for the hearing on the applications.

Background and High Court Directive

The ASI had submitted the survey report in a sealed cover to the district court on December 18. Subsequently, on December 19, the Allahabad High Court directed the ASI to submit the report on the scientific investigation and survey work to the civil court (senior division), fast track court in Varanasi.

On January 4, the civil judge (senior division) fast track court, Varanasi, directed the ASI to submit the same report of the scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex, which had been submitted to the Varanasi district court on December 18, by January 19.

The court’s decision to grant the ASI additional time underscores the complexities surrounding the Gyanvapi mosque complex and the cautious approach taken in addressing the related legal matters.
