Varanasi: In a heartbreaking incident that unfolded in Mandarwa area of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, two sisters were found living with the skeletal remains of their mother, who died in December 2022. The sobering revelation came after a complaint was made to local authorities by concerned neighbours. About the foul smell coming from the house.

According to sources, Shivakant Mishra, the in-charge of Lanka police station, stated that the mother died on 8 December 2022 due to illness because they lacked the resources for her treatment, but her daughters did not perform her last rites and kept the body locked in a room at the house in Mandarwa locality, they said. Their father moved out of the house many years ago.

As per police, the mother’s corpse was safely hidden inside a quilt by her daughters. Meanwhile, the girls continued to celebrate birthdays and other special occasions at the residence. The mother has been identified as 52-year-old Usha Tripathi and the daughters are 27-year-old Pallavi Tripathi who is a post-graduate and 17 to 18-year-old Vaishnavi Tripathi has passed 10th grade.

The strange case is of Mandarwa locality of Lanka police station area. Both manually removed and disposed of the worms after infesting the body. When the smell became unbearable, they climbed onto the roof of the house and ate food there. On getting information about the matter on November 29, local officials reached there, broke the locks on three doors of the house and entered there.

Upon arrival, officers found the sisters in a state of mental crisis, isolated from the world, living in their home with the remains of their dead mother and with no trace of them. The woman’s body was kept confined in a room of the house for about a year. The sisters, who are now in police custody, are believed to have avoided performing the last rites due to financial constraints.

This shocking incident focuses attention on the state of mental health care and the lack of social support systems for individuals coping with the loss of family members. The sisters, who noted their father’s absence for the past two years, were living separately, a situation which further increased their mental distress.

The police have confiscated the dead body and dispatched it for investigation to ascertain the cause of death. The incident is under investigation as authorities are trying to understand the circumstances that led to such a dire situation. The incident has sent ripples of concern throughout the community, highlighting the urgent need for robust mental health support systems and the importance of community vigilance in identifying and aiding those in need.
