Uttar Pradesh: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi granted bail by Sultanpur court in 2018 defamation case

New Delhi: On Tuesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was granted bail by the court, who appeared before Sultanpur Court in connection with a 2018 defamation case. Rahul Gandhi was granted bail on a surety of Rs 25,000 and a personal bond of the same amount. He pleaded innocence in court and denied any wrongdoing.

Gandhi was summoned by the court before his entry into the ‘Bharat Jodo Nayak Yatra’ in his former Lok Sabha constituency Amethi. Advocate Santosh Pandey told reporters, “Rahul Gandhi surrendered in the court today and the court took him into custody for 30-45 minutes. After that, his bail application was submitted and was accepted. The further date has not been given yet.”

Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary in charge communications said the yatra will be paused for a short period as the District Civil Court in Sultanpur had issued a summons to Gandhi in a defamation case filed by a BJP leader in August.

On social media platform X, Ramesh said,”Today is the 38th day of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra which will commence at 2 pm from Fursantganj in Amethi district and move towards Raebareli and Lucknow. This morning @RahulGandhi will be at the District Civil Court in Sultanpur that had issued a summons to him 36 hours earlier to appear before it on a defamation case filed by a BJP leader in August 2018.”

He added,”Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will not be derailed. Rahul Gandhi will not be silenced. The Indian National Congress will not be intimidated.” The case, initiated by Vijay Mishra on August 4, 2018, stemmed from remarks Gandhi purportedly made against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a Press conference in Bengaluru on May 8, 2018 during the Karnataka elections.
