Uttar Pradesh Congress plans a backward class meeting on October 31

The Uttar Pradesh Congress is proposing a state-level convention for backward classes on October 31, coinciding with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary. The event aims to support the demand for a caste census and garner support from backward communities in anticipation of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

This initiative by the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) represents another step in their ongoing efforts to connect with backward classes. They have previously conducted divisional and district-level conventions while advocating for a caste census.

Ajay Rai, the UPCC president, emphasized their commitment to reaching out to backward classes, with senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi championing the cause of a caste census. The state-level convention scheduled for October 31 at Gandhi Bhawan will focus on endorsing this demand and increasing reservations for OBCs based on their population.

In addition to targeting OBCs, the Congress is making efforts to engage with senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, who is currently incarcerated in Sitapur jail. The party asserts that Khan is facing victimization. Delegations from the Congress have also visited Khan’s wife, Tazeen Fatma, and son, Abdullah Azam, in Rampur and Hardoi jails, seeking to rebuild support among the Muslim community.

Furthermore, the Congress has launched the ‘Dalit Gaurav Samvad’ program, aimed at connecting with Dalits. This initiative, initiated on October 9, 2023, which coincides with the death anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram, will continue throughout the state until November 26, Constitution Day.
