YS Sharmila appointed Congress Chief of Andhra Pradesh after G Rudra Raju quits from post

Andhra Pradesh: On Tuesday, YS Sharmila, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s sister, was appointed as Congress President of the state unit . This move came a day after Gidugu Rudra Raju resigned from President post of Andhra Pradesh.

An official announcement by the party said,”Congress president has appointed Y S Sharmila Reddy as the president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect.”

On January 4, Sharmila joined Congress as she announced the merger of her YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) with Congress. In a statement, Congress announced the appointment of outgoing PCC President of Andhra Pradesh, Rudra Raju, as the special invitee to the Congress Working Committee.

Ahead of the Assembly polls in Telangana, Sharmila had opted out of the polls to prevent a split of votes that could have benefited former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. According to the report, Rudra Raju sensed that the Congress is leaning towards appointing Sharmila as the Andhra Pradesh Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president and pitting her against her older brother, YSRCP chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Sharmila announced YSRTP’s support for Congress in the November 30 Telangana Assembly polls, ahead of the election. Lauding the Congress, she said it is the largest and “most secular” party in the country as it unwaveringly serves all communities and unites all sections of people.
