17 Patients suffer loss of vision post cataract surgery at Ahmedabad hospital; Probe ordered

Ahmedabad: Taking suo motu cognisance, Gujarat High Court sought report from state government on Wednesday of post-surgery complications at Ramanand Trust Hospital in Mandal, located in the Ahmedabad district. The court’s intervention comes in the wake of growing concerns about patients facing vision problems after eye surgeries at the hospital.

17 Patients have complained of partial or complete loss of vision post cataract surgery at a trust-run hospital in Ahmedabad district, prompting an initial investigation into the matter. A nine-member expert committee tasked Gujarat health and family welfare department to conduct an inquiry and ordered the eye hospital at Mandal village not to carry out any more cataract surgeries until further orders, reported sources.

The court, headed by Justice AS Supehiya and Justice Vimal Vyas, issued notice to the Health Secretary and the Ahmedabad Rural Superintendent of Police. The court underlined the need for proper care for the affected patients and ordered the government to provide the preliminary investigation report by February 7.

In light of these worrying developments, Ramanand Trust Hospital has temporarily suspended all surgical operations. Investigation revealed that between January 1 and January 10, a total of 74 patients underwent eye surgery in the hospital. Of the 29 people who had cataract surgery on January 10, 17 reported significant vision loss.

Currently, five of these patients are undergoing treatment at Asarwa Civil Hospital and 12 patients are being treated at Ramanand Trust Hospital, which is managed by the Sevaniketan Trust. The patients are from Ahmedabad, Surendranagar and Patan districts. Medical experts suggest that infection caused by eye drops may be the root cause of vision problems after surgery; However, he stressed that no cases of complete vision loss have been reported so far.
