The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused the central government of orchestrating a plan to eradicate slum settlements in Delhi, despite pre-election promises made by the BJP to provide permanent housing. Senior AAP leader Atishi claimed on Friday that a recent meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office involved instructing all land-owning agencies to clear slums throughout Delhi.

Centre wants to demolish all slums in Delhi. “At a meeting two days ago in the Prime Minister’s Office, all land-owning agencies of Delhi were instructed to remove slums from across Delhi,” stated Atishi, a minister in the AAP-led Delhi government, during a press conference.

Citing the demolition of a slum cluster near Sunder Nursery by the Land and Development Office (L&DO), falling under the union ministry for housing and urban affairs, Atishi asserted that recent actions by the central government suggest a hidden motive.

In November, a slum cluster housing approximately 1,000 to 1,500 people, mainly ragpickers, street hawkers, maids, and laborers, was demolished between Sundar Nursery and Delhi Public School following a court order. The AAP claims these actions contradict the BJP’s commitments made prior to the elections.
