Arms licence case: SC grants bail to gangster-turned politician Mukhtar Ansari’s son Abbas Ansari

Lucknow: On Monday, The Supreme Court granted bail to son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, Abbas Ansari in connection with an arms license case. Ansari was detained under an order dated September 18, 2023, passed by the Chitrakoot District Magistrate under Section 3(2) of the National Security Act 1980.

This decision has come after a long legal battle, in which Abbas Ansari had sought relief from the court. The case has attracted considerable attention due to the involvement of Mukhtar Ansari, a controversial figure in Indian politics known for his alleged criminal activities.

Last week SC had adjourned the bail plea of mafia don-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari’s son Abbas Ansari till March 18. Abbas had been charged by the Uttar Pradesh Police for purportedly obtaining foreign firearms under the guise of participating in shooting competitions.

In the previous hearing, the Apex court had given a two-week time to petitioner Abbas Ansari to file an affidavit in response to the state government’s submission. In January of this year, the Supreme Court had issued a notice regarding the bail plea of Abbas Ansari and requested the response of the Uttar Pradesh government within four weeks.

In November 2023, the Allahabad High Court had dismissed Abbas’s regular bail plea, stating that he had purchased modern weapons by violating the import permit issued by the Indian National Rifle Association. Additionally, he imported prohibited bores without authorisation and possessed a revolver with spare barrels without a permit. The court noted Abbas’s possession of 4,431 cartridges.

Justice Subhash Vidyarthi of the High Court bench had remarked that being the current MLA representing the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, Abbas is expected to respect the country’s laws more than any other person. Earlier this month, a special court in Varanasi had sentenced the gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari to life imprisonment in a fake arms licence case.

In 2019, a case was filed against Abbas at the Lucknow Mahanagar Police Station. The FIR alleged that Abbas Ansari acquired a gun licence from Lucknow and subsequently transferred it to Delhi, where he procured firearms using the updated address.
