Assam: A police officer said that a woman was attacked with sharp weapons and burnt alive for allegedly practising witchcraft in Sonitpur district of Assam on Monday. The woman was 30-year-old.
Additional Superintendent of Police Madhurima Das said that the police have arrested four persons in this connection while two others are still absconding and a search operation has been launched to nab the duo. The incident took place at Bahbari village within the jurisdiction of Tezpur police station.
The arrested persons have been identified as Ajay Sanghar, Dhiraj Bhaguwar, Suraj Bhaguwar, Pinku Malhar, Baila Sanghar and Babul Nagdhar, all aged between 30 and 35 years. The police said that the woman was taken to a nearby government hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
The woman identified as Sangita Kati. The woman was attacked by a neighbour, identified as Suraj Baghwar, who had brought in some people from outside their Nij Bahbari village. The attackers, who were allegedly in an inebriated state, tied up her husband and later set her ablaze.
The neighbors were reportedly involved in a long-standing dispute over various issues and Baghwar had accused her of practicing witchcraft.Locals informed mediapersons that Sangeeta had previously been attacked and was prohibited from practicing witchcraft.
