Dhananjay Singh, the former Member of Parliament from Jaunpur, has been granted bail by the Allahabad High Court in a case involving kidnapping and extortion. However, the court has refused to stay his punishment.
Singh’s bail comes amidst controversy surrounding his transfer from Jaunpur district jail to Bareilly jail following a complaint by a local MLA. Allegations were made that Singh was influencing locals to support his wife, Srikala Reddy, who is contesting elections from Jaunpur parliamentary constituency on the Bahujan Samaj Party ticket.
In compliance with a government order, Singh was transferred from Jaunpur district jail to Bareilly jail on Saturday morning, as confirmed by Jaunpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Pal Sharma.
Singh and his associate Santosh Vikram were found guilty in a case involving the kidnapping and extortion of Namami Gange project manager Abhinav Singhal on March 6. Singh was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment and has been lodged in Jaunpur district jail since then.
Singh, who was eyeing a candidacy in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Jaunpur as Janata Dal’s (United) candidate, faced disqualification due to his conviction in the case. This development has significant implications for the political landscape in the region.
