Bengal police arrested 39-year-old Railway employee for smuggling drugs worth Rs 90 lakh

West Bengal: On Friday, a railway employee for smuggling drugs from the northeastern states arrested by a team of the Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police and recovered 9.081 kg of opium from his possession.

The contraband has a market value of approximately Rs 90 lakh, according to STF officials. Based on a specific information, the team laid a trap near Nasara High School in Nadia district on Thursday and arrested Raju Mandal, a 39-year-old Group-D employee of the Railways.

The STF officials added that Mondal was involved in the illegal trading of banned contraband from the northeastern states through a courier company. After this incident, a case has been registered at a local police station of Nadia district under several sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

About this incident, a senior official of the team told media, “It has also been found during the investigation that the arrested person is a Group-D staff (member) in Indian Railways and is presently posted at Naihati station. During the past few years, he was engaged in trading of banned contraband from Northeast states through parcel couriers.”

He added,”Yesterday (Thursday), he was caught red-handed by our team along with a huge quantity of opium after he received the same from a DTDC courier counter situated near Nasra Post Office under the Ranaghat police station area and tried to drive away on his scooter, but he was not able to flee away. Our team has successfully nabbed him on the way.”

Aobut this another official said,”During the investigation, all the possible links in this nexus will be investigated. The market value of the seized contraband is nearly rupees 90 lakh. The arrested accused is being interrogated to bust the whole racket.”
