Cabinet approves Rs 1 lakh cr scheme to increase grain storage capacity in cooperative sector

New Delhi: Food storage scheme has been started by the central government with the aim of benefiting the farmers. This decision has been taken by the Modi government after the cabinet meeting. This scheme is being considered very important for the farmers.

Issuing a statement on this scheme on behalf of Union Minister Anurag Thakur, it was said that in today’s cabinet meeting, a decision has been taken on the permission approval of the world’s largest food storage scheme in the cooperative sector. So far there is a total storage capacity of 1450 lakh tonnes and now 700 lakh tonnes of storage capacity will start in the cooperative sector. About one lakh crore rupees will be spent on this scheme.

The Union Minister said that in the next five years, the storage capacity in the cooperative sector will be increased rapidly. After this the storage capacity will be 2,150 lakh tonnes.

Anurag Thakur called it the world’s biggest food storage scheme. Also said that under this scheme, 2000 ton grain storage godown will be built in every block.

He further said that this step of the government will prevent wastage of others, as at present a large amount of food grains in the country is wasted due to lack of storage capacity. This will also reduce the dependence on imports and due to the development of grain storage capacity in rural areas, employment opportunities will also be created for the rural people.

With the implementation of this scheme, India’s food security will also be strengthened and due to the availability of storage at various places, the cost of transportation of farmers will also come down. India produces about 3,100 lakh tonnes of food grains every year and existing granaries can store only 47 per cent of the produce.
