Chhattisgarh’s ‘Biggest-Ever Success’: Behind the Scenes of Maoist Encounter

In a significant blow to Maoist activities, Chhattisgarh witnessed its largest anti-Maoist operation, resulting in the death of 29 rebels, including a senior leader named Shankar Rao with a bounty of ₹25 lakh on his head. The intense gunfight occurred around 2 pm in the Hapatola forest near Binagunda village in Kanker district, executed by a joint team of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the state police’s District Reserve Guard (DRG).

Details of the Operation

A video captured by a security personnel provides a glimpse into the operation’s intensity. The footage shows personnel trekking through the dense jungle when suddenly, gunshots echo through the silence. The video reveals the tense moments as the team cautiously advances, with one member warning against firing from behind to avoid friendly fire incidents.

The operation was led by Laxman Kewat, a decorated officer known for his expertise in encounters, having eliminated 44 Maoists in the past.

Chief Minister’s Response

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai lauded the operation as the “biggest-ever success” in the state’s fight against Maoists. He commended the courage of the security forces and highlighted the significance of the operation, especially with upcoming elections in Bastar and Kanker Lok Sabha constituencies.

“Maoists were likely planning a major incident to disrupt the democratic process, and their intentions were thwarted by our security forces. Home Minister Amit Shah has pledged for a Maoist-free Bastar, and this operation is a significant step towards achieving that goal,” stated Mr. Sai.

He expressed hope for an end to the violence, urging Maoists to engage in dialogue and embrace development. The three injured personnel, two from BSF and one from DRG, are reported to be out of danger and receiving treatment.
